Internet today is bombarded with infinite images of opulent and eye-pleasing interiors and ample of ideas about designing your space.
With lots of concepts and trends in various styles, you can spend hours drenched in the feeling of being in luxury that oozes out of these images.
Being a designer myself, I do follow some of these platforms and here I tell you to be careful when it comes to getting enchanted with these online concepts and trying to replicate them in your spaces.
Listing my 5 reasons on Why you should be careful before considering to xerox these designs in your space:
1. The designs you see are customized to those measurements:
It is obvious that the placement and size of the furniture that you see in these images are proportionate to each other and to the size of the room.
This means that the size of the furniture, light fittings, etc are congruent to the measurements of that place, and hence the final result that you see here is fit for the place it has been designed for.
When you plan to take inspiration from any of these images from the internet there is a very peculiar chance for these proportions to not justify the size and look of your room.
You may later land you up feeling guilty about buying something that was not suitable for your place.
Whether you plan to buy a piece of furniture or wish to customize it, the design proportions need to justify your space.
2. The images are customized to the material options available in that place:
This happens very often- You look at an image and go out in the market to find exactly the same or something similar. This is to remind you that these images are finished with materials that are best procured in those areas.
For instance, G5 or glass countertops are very trending as kitchen countertops on the internet but are not available in many places and hence are also are difficult to procure and maintain. If you still stick to get those, you may either find it very expensive or your contractors may fail to install them properly.
Another example is of Coastal Areas which have a lot of moisture all year round therefore items with glossy finishes are prone to get rustic.
Before selecting any material it is really important to check on the maintenance part of the final product.
The basic idea here is to duplicate only with lots of practical knowledge about what exactly will justify your location, place, and maintenance.
3. Sequence followed to complete the work is missing:
You may know this and understand that the entire finished job you see in these images is a result of some sequences followed to achieve these results.
These internet images do not provide any guidance whatsoever or any steps that really share any knowledge about the materials used.
Some basic knowledge of design and its process will help you to understand things better if you wish to replicate the results.
4. The design and colors of the image may fail to create linearity:
When you see any design on the internet, there are very strong chances that the colors and the look of the design may break the synchronicity with the rest of the house.
It is always better to choose what goes best with the theme of your entire house so that nothing looks out of place.
There are two things that generally fall apart when it comes to taking design inspirations:
a. A color may look attractive on the internet but may fail to impress you in real.
b. The colors may not justify the theme of the rest of the house.
The reason is obvious. You may like to keep it whatever style you want but the outcome should reflect your personality. Period!
5. In the end something always gets compromised:
The biggest challenge that comes up with duplicating these images is either you land up compromising on design or your creativity.
Have you realized when you are spoon-fed and directed by someone else you tend to put off your thinking cap and forget to apply your design sense that could have given you better results?
Creativity and your signature at your place will genuinely add a Midas Touch which is originally the purpose of these images.
